Epur si muove (for instrumental ensemble)

Program Notes:

The title refers to Galileo’s famous words, when defending his theory that the earth moves around the sun, in spite of the Catholic Inquisition’s condemnation. The work begins with the musicians on stage, but during the central interlude, the woodwinds and the brass walk away, to place themselves in the balcony.  This spacial arrangement explores the concept of center and periphery. At first the sound comes from the stage, and later from several points around it.  The work includes quotations from Cuban urban popular music, which are not exact but referential.
