“Hope is the thing with feathers” For piano, violin, and cello (2022)
The composer writes: “Hope is the thing with feathers was written during February/ beginning of March 2022. As I was thinking about the evolving nature of time, and the transitional character of life, the Russian attack on Ukraine made me realize how a world war could stop human time all together. Instead of trying to depict this horrible possibility I chose to focus on hope, inspired by the poem “Hope is the thing with feathers” by Emily Dickinson. This poem honors the human capacity for hope, portraying hope as a bird that lives within the human soul; this bird sings come rain or shine, gale or storm, good times or bad. The third piece “The persistence of time” was also inspired by the melting clocks of Salvador Dali. In this particular piece there is a rhythmic gesture that returns pervasively, that is reminiscent of the culture of my childhood, coming from my memories of sounds from Cuban neighborhoods”.
